| Project Brief: | The new building at the Kintore Way Children's Centre is a unique and individual design consisting of a long and serpentuous main building that winds its way along the perimeter of the school site. The design objective was to make the most efficient use of space in a constrained, irregularly shaped site as well as to provide an eye catching and interesting building for the neighbourhood, making it a focus of the community. A particularly distinctive feature is the roof. Starting off at 1st floor level, it rises up towards the centre of the “snake” before falling again back to the same level. It is clad with bright eternit fibre cement cladding panels. The structural detailing required was quite complex requiring imaginative thinking and precise setting out. The new Children’s Centre will provide 34-day care places for 18 babies and toddlers aged 6 weeks (age to be confirmed) to 12 months and 16 places for toddlers aged 12 months to 2½ years old. The new Centre will also house a buggy/pram park, consultation, sensory and therapy rooms for health services i.e. speech and language therapy and other health sessions aimed at child development and family support. |
